While vacationing should be a time of luxury and lavish enjoyment, it doesn’t have to be a time of waste! There are many ways for you and your family to go green on vacation. Here are five environmentally conscious green ideas for your next vacation.
1. Buy local, organic foods.
This one’s easy! In the Santa Ynez Valley there are a number of local farmers’ markets where you can get the best local produce. The Solvang Village Farmers Market takes place every Wednesday and features fresh produce, flowers and other local foods. There is also the New Frontiers health food store, which provides local food products. There’s no better way to truly experience an area than sampling its local fare. In our Santa Ynez vacation rental properties, the local food can be stored in the large refrigerators and cooked in the vacation homes’ beautiful kitchens.
2. Recycle all waste and donate unused food.
Another easy one. Simply separate your trash and put your recyclable waste in the appropriate recycling bins, or leave in a bag on the doorstep with a quick note to the cleaning staff to recycle it. We always encourage recycling! Also, the Santa Barbara Food Bank will always take unused food. If guests leave boxed, canned or otherwise sealed non-perishable food items, we are happy to drop it off at the food bank for guests.
3. Avoid plastic bags.
It’s always smart to bring along a few cloth bags on your Santa Ynez vacation. They are not only convenient for carrying supplies for a day trip, picnic or other activity on your vacation, but they also help you avoid using wasteful plastic bags and containers for transporting groceries and other supplies on your trip. Another simple way to go green on your California vacation!
4. Don’t waste electricity and water.
Just as you would at home, turn off the lights, TV, AC/heat, and other energy- and water-wasting appliances and services when you leave. Also, many vacationers choose not to wash the sheets and towels every night. (Besides, shouldn’t you be relaxing on your vacation, not washing sheets?) This is another easy way to go green, it just takes a little mindfulness!
5. Limit excess baggage.
This one can be a little tough, especially if you’re traveling in large groups. It’s been proven, though, that limiting excess baggage and thus the weight of your vehicle can reduce vehicle emissions during travel. The last thing you want to do is spend valuable vacation time hauling piles and piles of luggage in and out of your vacation home, so consider packing light and saving yourself the time and the emissions!
We still have properties available this Thanksgiving! We are discounting the rates at some of our larger homes for small groups. Please call us for more details!
I ACTUALLY WAS GOING TO CALL AND RAVE ABOUT THIS PROPERTY! IT WAS ABSOLUTELY
PERFECT FOR OUR FAMILY, WHICH INCLUDED THREE BABIES.
THE LOCATION, THE YARD, THE FURNISHINGS, AND THE LINENS WERE ALL GREAT.
PLEASE THANK THE OWNER FOR LETTING US RENT THEIR HOUSE.
We loved it. In fact, we loved the area so much that we’ve been plotting ways to move up there ever since and we really enjoyed our base camp from Friesian Farm since it was so perfectly located, yet so peaceful and remote at the same time.
The place was great — we were very comfortable and just absolutely fell in love with the doggies.
I really enjoyed your service and the other properties on your site. As soon as I can get a group of friends together, we’ll be back to try one of the larger homes, for sure.
We had such a great time, it was wonderful, the house was perfect for us. We hope we left it as clean as we were suppose to? The only thing I regret is not having more time there. We definitely would rent it again ! There is no other way to go to Santa Ynez then to rent a home like that. We all came back very relaxed and happy. Thank you so much. I will recommend to all our friends.
All the Best,
Hi Leanne – We had a great stay at Villa Santa Rita Hills! The property was gorgeous and the valley area was unbelievable! Wish we could have stayed longer! We will definitely consider staying at VSRH again next time we come that way!
We all had a really great time this year (like last year).
Many thanks to you and your team for making everything run so smoothly and having the house spotless and ready for our stay when we arrived.
We did have a small problem with the spa, but Cindy got right on it and it was sorted in a couple of hours. Cindy also allowed us a late ‘check-out’ on Sunday which was almost like having an extra day to enjoy the place.
We’re looking forward to our return again next year (and thinking 3 days instead of 2 :-)).
Thank you we had a great stay and loved the house. I’d like to rent it again for next year at the same time!
I just wanted to let you know what a great time we had at the Canyon Villa! It was very peaceful and lovely! Again, thank you so much! We really did have such a great time and are thinking about coming back next year and doing the half marathon again just to stay at that house! We will keep you posted.
Roger and I so enjoyed our stay at the Friesian Farm. We were so relaxed and comfortable. The grounds and views were breathtaking and the morning coffee with the warmth of the sun started our days with connection to the land and each other. Thank you for everything and we are sure to see you again. Oh, and Ike and the gang added such laughter and delight to our stay!…”Bye guys”! 🙂 Thank you again.
Kathy and Roger
