Property Description

Circa 1886

Take a step back in time. The Hill House circa 1886 is located on the famous Foxen Canyon wine trail, just a half mile from downtown Los Olivos. This historic horse and cattle ranch was home and business to the famous Mattei Family. Stagecoaches stopped here to rest horses after dropping off travelers at the Central Hotel (later known as Mattei’s Tavern). The Hill House was originally a cheese house for the small dairy that was here as well. The cozy rustic cottage is filled with old west charm, vintage furnishings, and a wood burning stove. Its simple, sweet character is unlike any other accommodation in the Santa Ynez Valley. This will be an experience you will never forget.

Property Reviews

Elizabeth

"The Hill House is a hidden gem! We walked to Mattei's Tavern for dinner and into Los Olivos the next day for wine tasting. Every little detail has been thought of in this adorable bungalow. The stars at night were beautiful from the front porch and snuggling up to the pot belly stove was amazing. Thank you for such a great stay! We will be back!"

"We had a relaxing stay at the hill house! We thought it was charming and cozy, the bed was great and the linens were soft. Having our own entrance into the ranch gave it a private feeling. It was great staying on a ranch, on the wine trail and 2 minutes from town!"

The Weaver Family

"We had a wonderful stay at The Hill House! The owners went the extra mile to add additional beds for our children and even had toys and books waiting for them next to the beds! The setting was amazing and the memories we created this past weekend as a family are priceless. To the owners, thank you so much for the kindness and time you shared with our family!"

Natalia

"We stayed at the Hill House twice in the last month and we are definitely coming back!
The property is spectacular and the photos unfortunately cannot capture the amazing energy and ambiance of this place. It sits on a hill surrounded by a spectacular horse ranch. Outside there is a beautiful porch and a garden area along with a swing hanging off of a very old tree. You can look at the stars at night as you are on the swing. The house itself is adorable but very well equipped. It’s got a perfect balance between antique pieces taking you back to the times of the Wild Wide West and modern amenities allowing for a comfortable stay. The bed, the pillows and the sheets are of the highest quality comparable to a Four Season’s Resort. In addition, there is an attic with two additional beds. The Hill House is half a mile from downtown Los Olivos, close to all the wineries, restaurants and shopping, but far enough that you feel you are in the wine country and away from the civilization. It has a lot of privacy. The place is one of a kind, that’s for sure."

"Rustic lil cabin – I was told it was 135 years old! Very simple and sweet – we loved it. A true getaway from our daily life."

"We had such a fun time at this Roy Rodgers cabin! Great decor and little touches. We called it our tree house :)"
