Ballard was founded in 1880 on the site of a Wells Fargo stage coach stop, and was named after the owner of the station. In 1882, residents believed that Ballard would grow to be the main city of Santa Barbara County. Today, however, Ballard is a combination of a sleepy village and an upscale bedroom community for the Santa Barbara region. Ballard boasts an excellent elementary school and prosperous residential market. The surrounding Santa Ynez Valley area is famous for its thriving and well-respected wine industry. A world-renowned equine veterinary hospital is located near Ballard.
